The E29th development in Tacoma, WA, marks an exciting milestone in the region’s efforts to address housing needs. Spearheaded by Christopher Brown of Brown Homes, his first development includes five duplexes, comprising a total of 10 units. Each duplex consists of one-bedroom, one-bath units and two-bedroom, two-bath units. Thoughtfully designed, these homes provide modern, functional spaces while catering to the diverse needs of residents.
Situated less than a block from the Emerald Queen Casino and close to major transit routes, the location is ideal for local workers and families seeking convenient, affordable housing options. “The area’s growing opportunities, combined with its proximity to downtown Tacoma, make it the perfect place to create new housing options” Christopher explained. With this project, Christopher exemplifies how BIPOC developers are driving meaningful change by delivering high-quality, accessible housing.
A Collaborative Path to Success
For Christopher, breaking ground on E29th is both a personal and professional milestone. 1DROP’s mentorship and network played a pivotal role in supporting Christopher throughout the process. Through their co-development model, 1DROP paired Christopher with the resources and knowledge needed to overcome barriers often faced by emerging developers of color, such as finding the land and/or securing funding for the project.
Advancing Energy Efficiency
E29th also exemplifies a commitment to sustainability by surpassing energy efficiency standards. Christopher highlighted the inclusion of modern features such as mini-split HVAC systems and cadet heaters, designed to reduce energy consumption and lower utility costs for residents. These energy-conscious choices reflect a broader goal of creating housing that is not only accessible, but also cost-efficient for working families.
Revitalizing the Neighborhood
Modern duplexes designed to meet Tacoma's housing needs.
By introducing affordable, high-quality housing, E29th aims to be one of many projects that rejuvenates the East side of Tacoma, bringing stability and pride to its residents.
As part of a broader vision, E29th reflects a commitment to creating inclusive, thriving communities. By blending modern designs with the existing character of the neighborhood, the project not only provides much-needed housing but also lays the groundwork for further developments that can uplift the region. Reflecting on the impact, Christopher shared, “It’s incredible to create something that gives people a chance to grow and thrive; it’s about creating hope and opportunity for generations to come.”
