HUD Hosts 1DROP on Developers of Color Project Tour
HUD Assistant Secretary Kimberly McClain joins the 1DROP and Alpha Sharp teams on a tour of Tacoma's affordable housing projects, showcasing the impact of developers of color on community transformation.
On September 6, 2024, HUD's Washington State Field Office hosted a special Developers of Color Tour for HUD Assistant Secretary Dr. Kimberly McClain in Tacoma and Lakewood, featuring impactful housing built by 1DROP co-founders and Alpha Sharp. The tour, led by Gary Gant provided a unique opportunity to spotlight developments by minority-owned firms working to expand affordable housing options and support diverse communities. Joining HUD were representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Congressman Derek Kilmer, underscoring the importance of policy and community collaboration in uplifting developers of color.
The tour itinerary began with an insightful briefing, where 1DROP founders Claude Remy, Dominique Remy, and Reggie Brown shared their mission and the vision behind their projects. The HUD team, including Dr. McClain, toured several properties, including 1DROP’s Oasis at Allenmore, a modern development designed to support women who often fall outside typical housing assistance programs and The Meadowlark, a modern senior housing complex. McKinley 20, a contemporary development nestled in the sought-after McKinley Hill Neighborhood, showcased how we can maximize density for affordable workforce housing. HUD attendees were impressed by all of the innovative approaches to providing safe, comfortable, and affordable housing options while maintaining a high quality bar.
Through this tour, HUD strengthened its commitment to advancing diversity in real estate development and highlighted the potential of minority developers to transform local communities. The collaborative event showcased how 1DROP and Alpha Sharp are not only building housing but also creating inclusive pathways for other developers of color to enter and succeed in the field. With HUD's support, these projects exemplify the power of federal partnerships to address housing equity and create lasting community impact.
